EFI Closure Statement: We are so sad to announce, English for Internationals has closed. We'd like to say thank you to our staff, students, and the global community for your support during the 30 years of our operation. Your trust allowed us to provide ESL courses to international students from 5 of the 7 continents totaling over 20,000 students from all over the world. It was our joy and privilege to serve and encourage you in your professional and personal lives. We hope the memories you have from being a part of the EFI family will live in your heart like they do in ours.
Sincerely,What we do for a living has a huge impact on how we live our lives. A job can determine how much time we get to spend with our families, where we live, and of course how much money we make. With that in mind, many of us have a dream job in mind. Landing that job may be a dream for now, but with a few steps, you may be able to make that dream a reality. As an English school focused on learning and helping students grow, here are our top tips for getting a new job.
You might think the first step to getting a new job is to update your resume. While that’s a good starting point, consider adding to it by learning a new skill that will help your resume stand out in a stack of papers. The demand for bilingual employees has been increasing in recent years, so investing in your communication skills will help you in your career. Find a great English school, such as English for Internationals, where you can further your education, learning what you need to know to be a better communicator.
Love it or hate it, the truth is that you will be judged by your resume or LinkedIn profile. If you have a well-written resume and an amazing LinkedIn profile, you will have a higher chance of getting an interview. According to Inc.com, about 250 people apply for a job listing—only about four to six are called for an interview.
Here’s how you can stand out to get selected.
Resume
Your resume did all the work up until this point—now, it’s up to you. You’ve got this! With a little bit of work and focus, you can impress during your job interview and get an offer.
Dress for the Job
Know what position you’re applying for and consider what would be appropriate to wear. Always wear a nice top and nice pants—or a dress. Our advice would be to look at the company’s staff page on their website to see how others in the company dress. It’s always better to overdress and to underdress. In other words, if you’re unsure whether to wear a tie, go ahead and wear it.
Prepare and Study
Every job interview is unique, but by doing a bit of research online, you will be able to have an idea of what questions you may be asked during the interview. Prepare your best responses and think of relevant work examples that you can use in your answers. Work-related stories are a great way to communicate who you are as an employee and demonstrate why you are a great candidate.
Be Polite
It’s easy to get nervous during job interviews. That said, always be yourself, and most importantly, be friendly. The company may be considering five people with the exact same set of skills—what will help you stand out is your personality. Show that you’re a good fit for that company by acting natural and polite. Showing up on time (a bit early) and making eye contact are great ways to show you care and take this seriously.
Ask Questions
In most interviews, you will have the opportunity to ask a few questions. Asking thought-out questions will show you care and will make a good impression.
Here are a few question examples to consider:
